Ken,
After experiencing distributor points plate failure, and having to temporarily replace with distributor from beetle running the same way you describe.
IMHO I strongly do not recommend this. It makes your car run advanced, and while giving tremendous power at acceleration,it sucks heck a gas and puts undue strain on a cylinder that does not have adequate cooling. Do not try moving your drive gear. Running the car this way will make you car ting knock and diesel upon shut down.
I know there is a way to run 009 since my 66 had one, but rely upon the experts here to find out how.
Just IMHO.

Subject: [T3] distributor drive gear
I wanted to replace by 009 distributor with a stock one and it appears to be off 180 degrees, ie at number 1 TDC the small "half" is lined up at 60 degrees.  and as a result I there is no room for  distributor with the vacumn advance. Can I remove the distributor drive gear at TDC  #1 and reinsert it at TDC #3 so that the larger half is aligned correctly at 60 degrees or should I just leave well enough alone? hope this makes sense. kk
