I was going to post the following to The List, but decided to send you the
E-mail, instead.
PLEASE READ.

I am admittedly not qualified to offer any "insight" regarding the removal
of those plastic sleeves but since it's my "dead beam" from which you are
"harvesting" parts, I've been reading, re-reading the Bentley, looking at
the illustrations & trying to understand the proper removal of thrust
rings, sleeves and needle bearings.

Since we don't know the *condition *or *presence *of those plastic sleeves
in the '72 beam which we installed, two things:

1.) maybe Jonathon Stiles who donated the '72 beam, has information about
the history of this beam, which we can use.
I will talk to Jonathon by phone tonight.

2.) In the Bentley book, Section 7, Front Axle, page 22, right-hand column
(and I quote) there's a

*"NOTE:*
*Do not pull out the plastic sleeves that the metal bushings fit into.
These parts are not subject to wear."*

In Fig. 8-20, it appears that there is a lip at the outer edge of the
plastic sleeve which prevents the plastic sleeve from being inserted too
far into the beam cavity.

Bentley also has a
*CAUTION on Page 23 in the left-hand column; regarding "Damaged plastic
sleeves ..."*

Jim, while it may be useful to have these "harvested" plastic sleeves in
hand after you remove the necessary hardware from the '72 beam (wheels,
calipers, rotors, trailing arms, torsion bars, etc.) to see the *condition,
existence *or *absence *of those plastic sleeves, maybe we should wait to
see if they are actually in the beam?

I did read Keith's reply.

I talked with Melissa, this morning. You had already left for the UW Lab.

I've cleared the way for us to work on the Square at the hanger. And I
called Jim Piper to cancel the Thursday appointment.
But I still have the Monday appointment.
