I am positive that my engine builder used case savers.  Here is a picture
of the engine on his stand:

I will torque to the lower value and see if they have any give.

I confirmed that I have 8mm studs, I applied the initial torque to each of
the four lower studs on the 1/2 side and experienced no movement
whatsoever.  I then applied the final torque and, similarly, experienced no
movement whatsoever.  The 1/2 side had the loosest valves, so it does not
appear we can blame this on the head studs pulling.

So unless there is another explanation, we're down to running too rich and
fuel deposits.
