Greetings again from Switzerland !
I mean you can turn the Key to Ignition on position, check all the ignition out and find it OK.
Then turn the Key to crank the engine over. It will crank all day without starting, until the battery goes flat, because the ignition contact has been lost with the Key in that position. You decide to give up. Release the Key. The engine starts.
We are in Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland by the way. Very near to Thun, where some of the first Porsche 356 bodies were made by the coach builders Beutler.
They run the Jungfrau Classic Car Rally here every year. August 25th-26th this year. jungfraurallye.com
Lady Drivers only, it seems !
Regards,
Steve

Greetings from Switzerland.
Have you tried releasing the Ignition Key slightly when
cranking the engine over ?
It is very common on old VWs for the Ignition Switch to be
worn, so that when the Key is held in the position for
cranking the engine over to start, the Ignition Contact is
no longer made. Release the Key slightly and it starts !
That may not be the fault with yours but I have owned 411,
412 and Type 3s where that was the case.
Regards,
Steve

Re/ 71 T-2 Std.?? It's been cold out so maybe some
starting
problems happen...but, my battery checks out Good at the
Auto Shop.- Once when start attempt got weaker and weaker,
a
neighbor loaned me his Jump Start thing and car started
right up.- Went home and put battery on overnight
charge...even though my gravity tester thing showed all
cells right up to the top.? Started good in the
morning...with warm battery anyway.- Later that day
starting
got a little sticky again...cranked, cranked, then
started.
That's when I went to get battery checked at an auto
store.?
Battery good.- Next day...hard to start again...but it
did.
So....question is, can there be something funny in the car
itself that's maybe weakening the battery after sitting
overnight or even for maybe five hours in daytime???? Any
way to test for some little juice drainage when car (and
radio and everything) is off?
Does success of the Jumper Box tell us that the starter's
ok?
Didn't yet put in new clean fuel filter.?? Does that have
bearing on the case?

To test for a parasitic drain:
Disconnect negative battery terminal from battery. Connect
your multimeter in series between the negative battery
cable
and the negative battery post. Make sure you connect the
leads to the meter properly, there's usually a separate
jack
for current measurements.
Get in the car, close the doors, make sure everything
electrical is turned off, then turn your meter on and
measure the current. Start with A and switch the range to
mA
if the results are low enough.
Report back your reading.
Note, do not turn ignition on or try to start car or turn
on
any large electrical consumers while doing this test. Most
meters have an internal 10A fuse, if you try turning
something on you can blow your meter.
Also what is the voltage reading across the battery
terminals just prior to one of these hard starts?
